Why This Matters for Your RBT Career
Some of the most valuable learning opportunities don't happen at a table—they happen while playing, moving, laughing, exploring, and connecting with another person. RIT gives RBTs a structured way to embed evidence-based teaching into those moments without allowing the teaching procedure to take over the interaction. This course is especially valuable for RBTs who want to become more confident with naturalistic teaching. It demonstrates that effective ABA can be both systematic and responsive to the learner: there is a clear model-wait-repeat procedure and data collection system, but the technician also follows the learner's interests, preserves access to communication, watches for engagement, and returns quickly to play after each teaching opportunity. Ultimately, RIT encourages an important shift in perspective: don't begin by asking the learner to enter your world—enter theirs first. RBTs leave this course with practical strategies they can use to turn everyday play into opportunities for imitation and learning while keeping connection at the center of the interaction. Join first. Model clearly. Wait. Support when needed. Take data. Then get right back to playing.
About This Course
Reciprocal Imitation Training (RIT) Through Play teaches RBTs how to create meaningful learning opportunities within the activities a learner already enjoys. Rather than separating teaching from play, RIT emphasizes joining the learner first—following their interests, imitating their actions, and building engagement—before introducing opportunities for the learner to imitate. RBTs will learn how to prepare the environment, recognize when a learner is happy, relaxed, and engaged, select developmentally appropriate actions to model, use simple narration and playful engagement, implement the three-opportunity imitation procedure, follow planned error-correction procedures, and collect useful data while keeping the interaction natural.
